Youth Club Trip

On Monday 16th October we traveled by minibus to the Uist Outdoor Centre in Lochmaddy for a week of ‘grueling torture’.

Kenina, Ali, Anna, Ian Duncan, Sharon, Derek, Andy, Rhiannon and 2 leaders Calum and Carol Ann participated in this fun filled week!

After settling into our temporary digs on the Monday (including a major shop at the very small co-op), the fun began in earnest on the Tuesday with an early morning paddle in the adjacent loch. Ian Duncan, Andy and Derek parted company with their kayaks and enjoyed a dip in the cool (?), clear waters!  This was followed by an afternoon scampering up and down a rock face (also known as rock climbing and abseiling!).

Wednesday morning, what can only be described as a mad woman yelling at us to run to the pier, jump off pier, climb over rocks, jump in sea, get out of sea and climb over rocks, repeat 4 times and then run home (this activity was described in the brochure as ‘coasteering’) – it is an experience that will remain with us all for a long time to come!!!

We then had some thrills in the rib driven by our very own ‘ninja’, hurtling through the choppy waves from Lochmaddy to Loch Eiport, with a chorus of howling banshees (Anna and Carol Ann) competing with the thundering roar of the engine.

Thursday was the day it dawned on us that we had actually been sent to ‘FAT CAMP’! Just like King Cole’s men we were marched up and down 3 magnificent mountains, followed by a long trek back to the bus. Calum Richings was heard muttering that ‘he couldn’t remember the last time he had so much fun’ (or something like that!).

On Friday we took the minibus down to Griminish and then had a much quieter trip on the rib out to the Monarch Isles to view the seal colony.

The first 5 minutes of seal pup watching was joyous, although it has to be said 3 hours later we were starting to find it rather tedious!!

The weather had turned rather nasty on the trip back which meant we had to come ashore a fair distance from the minibus. However, our super ‘ninja’ did give the girls piggy back rides to the beach! This was followed by a precarious off road drive in, at times, an almost horizontal land rover – with the added bonus of a flat tyre!! Amazing the amount of words you can play eye spy with in the interior of a land rover

We rounded off our week with a well deserved, sumptuous dinner in the Lochmaddy Hotel.

Saturday saw us heading for some much needed retail therapy in Taigh Chearsabagh before heading for the ferry and then the weary crew took the long road home!!
